Arkansas 20K State Championship
September 20, 2014
(Links to the 2014 entry form and to on-line entry are at the bottom of the page.)
The Arkansas 20K starts in front of the Benton High School Cook Field House on Border Street. The course then follows Sevier Street through downtown Benton, past the historic Saline County Courthouse, through residential areas, across the Sevier Street bridge over Interstate 30, and through additional residential areas. After turning right on Hwy 229 (Old Hwy. 67) and crossing the Saline River Bridge, the course continues out Hwy. 229 to Interstate 30 at the 4.7 mile point. The course turns right before reaching the I-30 underpass and follows the westbound access road to the turnaround approximately 3/10 mile past Mountain View Road.
Runners return by the same route and finish in front of Cook Field House.
All turns are marked with large signs with arrows. Turns the first and last 3 miles are also staffed by cadets from the Benton High School ROTC program.
The race will be chip timed
The course will remain open until 10:30 for slower runners. An early start option (7:00) will be available for runners who expect to take over 2 1/2 hours to finish. Any runner taking the early start who finishes between 2:00 and 2:15 will be given a finish time of 2:15. Any early starter who finishes under 2 hours will be disqualified and may be barred from future participation in the 20K. Traffic control and aid support will be limited until the 7:30 race start.
Temperatures can range from the mid-50s to mid- 80s. Humidity can sometimes be high.
The 20K is an excellent test/training run for a fall marathon as well as a challenging race in its own right.
There will be a $100 prize for the male and female winner who breaks the course record.
Male Record: 1:03:43 (1984)
Female Record: 1:15:50 (1992)
There will be a die cast metal finisher’s medal for the first 250 finishers.
